Not all honey soap is created equal. Most use processed, pasteurised honey — heated until the enzymes, antioxidants, and natural goodness are largely gone. At Swabees, we use raw honey straight from our own hives in the Lincolnshire Wolds, and the difference goes far deeper than the label.
What Raw Honey Actually Contains
Raw, unpasteurised honey is a remarkably complex substance. It contains natural enzymes, amino acids, antioxidants, trace minerals, and hydrogen peroxide — all of which are significantly reduced or destroyed by the heat used in commercial pasteurisation. When we add our raw wildflower honey to soap, we're preserving as much of that natural profile as possible.
It also contains local pollens from the wildflower meadows and hedgerows of the Lincolnshire Wolds AONB — a small but meaningful connection to the landscape where our bees forage.
What It Does in Soap
Honey is naturally humectant, meaning it draws moisture to the skin and helps it stay there. In a cold-process soap like ours, it contributes to a creamy, conditioning lather and helps the bar retain a gentle softness that synthetic alternatives simply can't replicate.
The natural sugars in honey also accelerate the lather — you'll notice our Honey and Shea Butter soap produces a rich, dense foam even in hard water.
